Key West Mermaid Festival
Each year thousands of people travel to the Florida Keys for the Key West Mermaid Festival. This special gathering of mermaids, mermen, and visitors takes place in Key West for five fun-filled days.
This year (2022) marks the 3rd annual Key West mermaid festival. Organized by local Key West native Kristi Ann, the festival has quickly become a popular Key West event. The festival attracts mermaid enthusiasts from all over and provides activities for the whole family.
Mermaid Festival 2022 runs from July 1-5 and is another reason to visit Key West, Florida. No matter how you arrive, Key West is a great spot to enjoy watersports, sightsee, or just laze around.
The Key West mermaid festival includes ‘Mermaid Meet & Greets’, vendors, and education about ocean awareness. Vendors will offer mermaid and ocean-inspired products during the Mermaid Festival.
While some people adorn costumes with mermaid tails, you don´t need to dress up to enjoy the mermaid-themed fun. Children can have a blast! There are plenty of special activities and events on offer for kids.
Be sure to visit Truman Waterfront Park during ‘Salty Saturday & Sunday’ for fascinating art and delicious food. This event runs on the 2nd and 3rd of July between 10am and 5pm. The Key West mermaid festival is the perfect place to mingle with folks who have traveled from all over.
Family Fun and Education
The Key West mermaid festival isn´t just about mermaid costumes. The festival also seeks to educate people about how to leave a green footprint on the island. After all, we all want to maintain the integrity of Key West and the Florida Keys in general.
Enjoy activities and events while learning about how to do your part to preserve the natural beauty of the area. Each year Key West welcomes thousands of visitors who wish to enjoy the stunning beauty of the Keys. However, all that attention and human traffic can have a negative impact on the environment. The Mermaid Festival organizers are serious about helping people learn to reduce their impact on the natural world.
Reef Relief & the Mermaid Festival
Organizers of the Key West mermaid festival have also teamed up with Reef Relief for the 2022 Mermaid Festival. A portion of proceeds from the festival will be donated to support this organization. Reef Relief is a Key West 501(c) Non-Profit Organization dedicated to improving and protecting the area´s coral reef ecosystem. Reef Relief sponsors local education, beach clean-ups, and Coral Camp.
Coral Camp allows children (6 to 12 years of age) to explore and learn about the nearby marine environment. Kids are educated through activities at the Reef Relief Environmental Center in Key West.
Frequent visitors to the coral reefs around Key West are divers and snorkelers. Reducing human impact on these natural wonders is important, and a key focus of the Mermaid Festival organizers. Protecting these reefs ensures that others can enjoy them for years to come!
How to Participate in the Mermaid Festival 2022
Are you a mermaid enthusiast? Do you have original food, art, creations or mermaid/ocean inspired products that fit with the theme? The Key West mermaid festival is accepting applications to join their mermaid pod. The pod will visit various venues on the island throughout the festival. This is a great opportunity to engage with other mermaids at this family-friendly event.
The vendor´s market will be held on ‘Salty Saturday & Sunday’ at the Truman Waterfront Park. The mermaid festival organizers sponsor this market to showcase local vendors and those from other areas. Connect with prospective customers who share your love of mermaids and all things aquatic. For more information or to obtain an application, please visit the festival´s website.
Other Activities in Key West
4th of July Fireworks
This year The Key West mermaid festival coincides with the 4th of July. The Edward B. Knight Pier is the best place in town to view the 4th of July fireworks. The pier (formally White Street Pier) was renamed to honor the local businessman and philanthropist after his passing in 2016. We suggest you get there early because it can get quite crowded. The show starts just after the sun goes down. Two other great viewpoints to see the fireworks are Smathers Beach and Higgs Beach.
Key Lime Pie Festival
The July 4th weekend sees the return of the 8th Annual Key Lime Pie Festival. This fun festival features a pie eating contest, scavenger hunt, martini and margarita competition, and other activities.
